Or even upper class vs underclass. Lizzie is more ruthless but has often moral barriers and, in some ways, more compassion than Eliza does. Eliza, though, is easily subversive and rebellious in her own role as a female doctor, a police surgeon and a doctor in Bethlem Mental Hospital. Their banter, their battle of wits and her constant, expert put downs are truly glorious. One wishy-washy issue I have is hard to put into words — but the book felt long. I was enjoying it but I was starting to count down and very conscience of how much of the book is left. So, yes, I definitely had a sense that it needed cutting down a bit, it needed speeding up a bit, we needed to reach the conclusion a little faster than we actually did.

In the end, it left me vaguely impatient with the ending rather than revelling in it. I think in part it was because this huge and wonderful world is just, perhaps, just a little too huge. So we have the Royal Society persecuting any deviation from orthodox science — which is a fascinating background world building thing. But then that pulls Eliza into it not just as a potential unorthodox practitioner but because the mysterious head of the Royal Society has Plans For Her.

We have the storyline of Captain Lafayette and his deep dark secret and the nuance of his relationship with Eliza and Lizzie.

The Devious Dr. Jekyll

We have the Lizzie and all of her contacts with the underworld which are all kind of involved and complex and emotional scenes. The author did a good job is making the world both familiar and fantastic. My only complaint was that the murder from my perspective was too easy to solve. However, I read a lot of murder mysteries and watch police procedurals, so while not hard for me for the character it was fine. Narrator: This was my first book with this narrator and she has a pleasing British voice. I loved Lizzie's "low class" accent and Eliza's more refined one, it was easy to tell the difference between the two.

She could use some work on some of her male voices, but overall Ms. Crick did an excellent job. What could have been a thoughtful mystery and a fresh look at the story of Dr J.

The Electric Empire series

I gave up half way through the book. Struggled to finish this book.

I liked it, but think about 50 pages could have been edited out. Full of great ideas and vivid characters, but some sloppy pacing and convoluted plotting detracts. Narrator's performance is very lively, with clear and distinct voices for the two leads. An exciting, well-crafted, original story and an amazing narrator. Reading this marvelous book on my own would have been great fun, she made it even better. Your audiobook is waiting….

Kindle Customer I enjoyed this enormously! Diabolical indeed! Just a few sips, and a seductive and impulsive Lizzie Hyde is unleashed. The members of the Royal Society do not trust Eliza, and they send their enforcer, the mercurial Captain Lafayette, to prove she's a dangerous sorceress.

The careful doctor knows that one wrong step can make her prey to the clever Lafayette, a man who harbors an evil curse of his own.
